Job Description

Primary Purpose:
Operate forklifts to support stevedoring activities within the port, focusing on the safe and efficient handling of cargo, including work onboard vessels within the holds for loading and unloading operations.


Key Responsibilities / Key Duties / Key Deliverables

Equipment Operation and Safety

  • Operate 3.5-ton forklifts safely and efficiently in compliance with operational and safety procedures.
  • Conduct pre-start inspections (fuel, oil, radiator, battery, tires) to ensure forklift readiness.
  • Maintain constant situational awareness to avoid accidents and damage.

Cargo Handling and Movement

  • Safely load and offload various cargo types directly from vessels and within the port area.
  • Ensure correct positioning, securing, and protection of cargo using tarpaulins or other materials.
  • Transport cargo efficiently between designated areas while maintaining load integrity.

Equipment Maintenance and Housekeeping

  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of forklifts.
  • Re-fuel equipment and update maintenance logs promptly.
  • Identify and report wear, tear, or mechanical issues to the Supervisor or Storeman.

Compliance and Safety Standards

  • Adhere to company safety regulations, port policies, and legal requirements to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Report faults, incidents, and irregularities immediately as per standard procedures.
  • Support compliance with ISO standards and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Teamwork and Support Functions

  • Collaborate with stevedoring teams and assist in general labour tasks related to vessel operations.
  • Provide support in additional port-related duties as assigned by Supervisors.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate safe and efficient cargo movement.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Complete and maintain accurate operational and maintenance records.
  • Ensure all documentation related to forklift usage, cargo handling, and fuel logs are up to date.


Job Requirements:

Highest Education:

  • NQF Level Two (2) Qualification (Grade10).

Work Experience:

  • Three (3) years’ experience operating a forklift in a stevedoring, logistics, or port operations environment.   

Other Requirements:   

  • Basic English literacy and numeracy
  • Valid Forklift Certification
  • Valid Code B Driver’s License
